In acknowledgement of the complexity of the discussion surrounding the referendum on establishing a First Nations Voice to parliament in Australia, we wanted to present a nuanced statement on our position in this referendum and importantly, our ongoing commitment to meaningful change.
The discussion around the proposed referendum on establishing a First Nations Voice to parliament in Australia is more nuanced than a yes/no campaign allows.
As a Foundation we work closely with community and approach our work by listening and responding to community expertise. We are listening to First Nations peers, community members, and leaders but we recognise that, just as with any complex question or systemic shift, there is a diversity of opinions and considerations, and not always a simple answer.
No matter the outcome of this referendum our approach and commitment remain the same. We will continue to strive for and ally with the First Nations community; supporting efforts in pursuit of truth-telling about Australia’s history and meaningful change including Nation-based treaties, parliamentary seats, and ultimate sovereignty over First Nations matters.
We recognise the ongoing challenge of misinformation and the harmful impact of this debate on First Nations communities. In the lead up to the referendum we will work to share factually accurate and accessible resources and information and to support First Nations organisations and communities.
